The Aukum Fairplay FireSafe Council proudly announced the approval of their Firewise USA  Application. The Council was welcomed by the Firewise USA Team to the growing number of Firewise Sites where residents throughout the nation are working to reduce their wildfire risks.

Ken Pimlott, Risk Assessment Chair of the Aukum Fairplay Firesafe Council,  led the team effort carried out by the committee. Active members of the committee are: Janet Barentson, Ed Matwich, Greg LaDeaux, Sandra Perez Schwartz, Richard Carlson, Dean Martucci, and John Hess.

Ken Pimlott stated, “I am extremely proud of each member of the Risk Assessment Committee for their dedication and commitment in achieving FireWise USA. This small team of volunteers rolled up their sleeves on evenings and weekends to conduct the field review and complete the risk assessment. As a result of their efforts, the communities within the Aukum Fairplay Fire Safe Council will be better prepared for wildfire.”

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Firewise USA® program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses.

In order to receive designation as a Firewise Community, the Aukum Fairplay Fire Safe Council completed a risk assessment of the homes and businesses in their community, developed an action plan to address the identified risks and demonstrated investments in educational outreach vegetation removal during the last year. Earning the designation as a Firewise Community demonstrates their commitment to protecting the community from wildfire, helps guide future activities and provides support for potential funding opportunities.
